Uncovered Weekly Wrap 8.21.26
AI’s physical layer wants Oakland. Alex Cooper shows where the moat lives. Claude leaves marks.

Oakland/AI
The Story:
Oakland, California became part of the national AI conversation. Jeff Bezos leased roughly 100,000 square feet for his Project Prometheus and Tesla grabbed 40,000 square feet in the same complex. On paper, this may seem like just another commercial lease, but it signals to something much bigger for Oakland.
The Real Story:
Phase 1 of AI brought us mostly digital with models, software, chatbots, and apps. Phase 2 is about what AI actually needs to run—chips, robotics labs, and manufacturing, and energy which requires massive physical space. Oakland is close to San Francisco, has the empty industrial space, and port access.
The Shift:
Oakland could become the physical AI hub because of who is showing up. And that creates opportunity. High-paying workers create restaurant demand. Restaurants create retail. Retail creates housing. Housing attracts developers. Developers attract capital.
Additional Note: This story hit many nerves. When we start talking about AI infrastructure, everyone assumes data centers. We are not talking about data centers. We are talking about advanced manufacturing, robotics, and physical AI. Done right, the community in Oakland will get to participate in what comes next.
Alex Cooper/Audience as an Asset
The Story:
Alex Cooper’s media company, Unwell, just raised its first outside capital at a valuation of $500 million while retaining majority ownership. At the same time, her beverage brand is shutting down.
The Real Story:
Unwell media brand reaches 70 million women every month. Has a $125 million deal with SiriusXM. Hosts events. Ran a TikTok campaign for Google that reached 39 million views. Cooper’s brand influence is so signifiant, that Google needed the distribution to outperform their own.
The Shift:
The next generation of conglomerates won’t start by owning physical products. They’ll start by owning audiences. Those audiences will launch, acquire, and scale everything else.
Claude/Watermarking
The Story:
Claude plans to embed a watermark in every piece of text it generates. Everything copied and pasted from Claude carries a fingerprint even if you edit it.
The Real Story:
This isn’t about catching kids cheating. It’s about authenticity and we’ve seen this play out across numerous platforms. The EU AI Act’s Article 50 requires this as of Aug. 2, 20026, and Anthropic went ahead and applied it globally. Most work is now a combination of human effort working with AI and now Claude is letting us know where AI entered the process.
The Shift:
We’ve spent three years trying to make AI indistinguishable from humans and now we’re moving in the opposite direction. If every AI model moves this direction it will create an entirely new layer of authenticity.
DREAM IN PUBLIC
Sometimes people need the right language for something they already feel. The Oakland video sparked a lot of reaction. People saw Bezos + Tesla + West Oakland and immediately went to displacement, data centers, outsiders and who actually benefits from this. But then a local representative reached out to Drew because his piece helped frame the opportunity in a way that has been challenging to articulate. That felt meaningful. The narrative of the video wasn’t— billionaires are saving Oakland. The story pointed to Oakland’s infrastructure, talent, and potential the market is finally being forced to notice.
